HOW TO REDUCE WRINKLES WHILE EMBRACING THE BEAUTY OF AGING

26 June 2024

Wrinkles—they sneak up on us like uninvited guests at a party, popping up just when we thought we were in our skincare prime.

Now, don’t get me wrong, every line on our face tells a story. That crinkle by your eyes? That’s from years of laughter. The furrow in your brow? Probably from that time you tried to do your taxes on your own. While we cherish these memories, let’s be honest—we don’t always want to wear them like badges of honor on our faces.

As an esthetician with over 16 years of experience in the beauty industry and a believer in the power of a good giggle, I’m here to guide you through the maze of anti-aging advice that’s out there. From effective morning rituals that don’t involve summoning the fountain of youth, to nighttime spells—ahem, I mean, skincare routines—that leave you glowing, there are ways to keep your signs of aging to an absolute minimum.

So, grab your favorite drink (bonus points if it’s got antioxidants), cozy up, and let’s dive into this topic of aging and skin together. Because aging gracefully isn’t just a myth—it can be your reality, crafted with a little bit of science, a dash of nature, and a whole lot of love.

UNDERSTANDING WRINKLES: A LITTLE LESSON IN SKIN SMARTS
So, you’ve noticed a few new laugh lines, or perhaps the infamous ’11’ between your brows is becoming your constant companion. Before we whip up any magical concoctions, let’s unpack what’s really going on beneath that beautiful surface of yours.

Why do we get wrinkles?
Well, imagine your skin as a plush, comfy sofa. Over time, that sofa might lose some of its stuffing, and the fabric might not be as tight as it once was (thanks a lot, gravity!). Similarly, our skin loses collagen and elastin—those are the proteins that keep our skin firm and bouncy.

Plus, our natural oil production slows down (yes, even for those of us who’ve battled oily skin all our lives). This combo can leave our skin looking a little less plush and a little more… well, lived-in.

External factors are also party crashers here. The sun, our beloved source of vitamin D, can be quite the frenemy to our skin when we hang out too much without proper protection. UV rays speed up the breakdown of our skin’s structural proteins (rude, right?). Then there’s smoking, pollution, and even our facial expressions—smiling, frowning, squinting—all of which can crease our skin over time.

While genetics play a role in how we age, our lifestyle choices have a massive say in the matter too. It’s like choosing the path in a choose-your-own-adventure book: some paths lead to premature aging, while others lead to more graceful aging.

Here’s why this kit is a game-changer: Crafted with love and the advanced formulations of Lira Clinical, this kit is your complete arsenal against those stubborn signs of aging. We’re talking fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, uneven skin tone, and more.

HOW TO USE THE ENLIGHTENED BEAUTY ANTI-AGING STARTER KIT TO REDUCE WRINKLES
Here’s an example of an AM + PM regimen to incorporate these products effectively:

Morning Routine (AM):
PRO Exfoliating Cleanser: Start your day by cleansing your face with the PRO Exfoliating Cleanser to remove any overnight build-up and refresh your skin. This sets a clean base for further treatment and hydration.

Pro Firming Serum: After cleansing, apply the Pro Firming Serum. This serum is designed to enhance skin’s firmness and elasticity, providing a revitalized and lifted appearance throughout the day.

BIO Lift Creme: Follow the serum with BIO Lift Creme to hydrate and nourish your skin deeply. This cream will help keep your skin supple and protected from environmental stressors throughout the day.

Evening Routine (PM):
PRO Exfoliating Cleanser: Reuse the PRO Exfoliating Cleanser in the evening to wash away impurities and any makeup, ensuring your skin is perfectly clean before applying treatments.

PRO Retinal-Plus Treatment: Apply the PRO Retinal-Plus Treatment at night, as retinol is best used in the evening to avoid sun sensitivity. This treatment works overnight to reduce fine lines and improve skin texture.

BIO Lift Creme: After the retinol treatment, apply a layer of BIO Lift Creme again to deeply moisturize and aid in overnight recovery and lifting.

PRO Anti Aging Pads: Two to three times a week, substitute your Retinal-Plus Treatment with the PRO Anti Aging Pads in the evening. These pads deliver a concentrated dose of anti-aging ingredients, enhancing skin clarity and smoothness.

While having a proper skincare regimen is a great start, to back up your investment you need to also look beyond the bathroom cabinet and explore how the choices you make in your daily life plays a starring role in your skin’s health. Let’s dig into that next.

DAILY HABITS TO PREVENT WRINKLES: YOUR NEW BEAUTY MANTRA
Alright, beauty warriors, it’s time to gear up with some daily habits that’ll not only prevent new wrinkles but might also give a little love to the ones that have already made themselves at home on your beautiful face. Here’s how we can fortify our skin’s defenses against the march of time.

First up, worship the sun, but from a distance. ☀️
I know, I know—nothing beats feeling the sun on your skin, but let’s make sure it’s a gentle caress rather than a harsh slap. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be your go-to armor every single day, rain or shine. Think of it as your invisible shield against the sun’s aging laser beams (a.k.a. UV rays, but I like to keep it dramatic).

Hydration is your skin’s best friend. 💦
Whether it’s chugging down water like it’s your job or slathering on that uber-hydrating moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, you’ve got to keep your skin quenched. Hydrated skin is happy skin, and happy skin doesn’t crease as easily.

Feed your face, and I don’t just mean at meal times. 🍋
Incorporating foods rich in antioxidants can combat the free radicals, which are really just molecules that love to fast-forward aging. Brightly colored fruits and veggies, nuts, and green tea are your culinary weapons against wrinkles. Plus, they make for delicious snacks and meals—beauty and brunch all in one!

Catch those Z’s. 💤
Sleep isn’t called beauty rest for nothing. Our skin repairs itself while we snooze, so skimping on sleep is like pulling an all-nighter before the biggest exam of your life—every single night. Aim for 7-9 golden hours each night to let your skin do its rejuvenation magic.

Kick the butts, and not just the cigarette kind. 🚭
Smoking is a notorious aging accelerator for your skin, robbing it of oxygen and nutrients that are crucial for skin health. If you’ve been thinking about quitting or drastically reducing your smoking habits, consider this another loving nudge towards a smoke-free life—for your skin’s sake and your overall health.

Moderate your alcohol intake. 🍷
We all love a glass of wine to unwind, but alcohol can dehydrate and inflame your skin, leading to a dull and aged appearance over time. Try to keep those happy hours truly happy by indulging in moderation and always alternating with water.

Get moving and grooving. 🏃‍♀️
Exercise isn’t just good for your muscles, it’s vital for your skin too. Regular physical activity boosts circulation, which helps to nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood flow also helps to carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, or a brisk walk, find a way to move that makes you smile.

Stress less, glow more. 🧘🏾‍♀️
It may sound easier said than done, but reducing stress is still essential for reducing wrinkles. Stress can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to breakouts and further accelerating aging. Find stress-busting activities that bring you joy and calm. Meditation, reading, or even catching up with a friend can lower your stress levels and help maintain your skin’s youthful glow.

SKINCARE MISSTEPS THAT CAN CAUSE WRINKLES
As we navigate our skincare journeys, it’s easy to stumble into common traps that can secretly speed up the aging process. Let’s highlight some specific skincare missteps to avoid, ensuring your routine supports, rather than sabotages, your quest for youthful, glowing skin.

Overzealous Exfoliation: 🧴
While sloughing off dead skin is crucial for rejuvenation, too much can cause irritation and weaken your skin barrier. Limit physical scrubs to once or twice a week and opt for gentler approaches, like skin cycling, that help promote skin cell turnover without over-doing it.

Neglecting the Neck and Décolletage: 🧖🏼‍♀️
Many of us focus on our faces and forget these critical areas that can show the first signs of aging. Extend your skincare routine to your neck and chest to keep these areas as nourished and protected as your face.

Skipping Serum: ✨
Serums are potent allies in the fight against aging, packed with high concentrations of active ingredients. If you’re not using a serum yet, consider incorporating one that targets specific concerns like hydration, firmness, or brightness. Click here to shop serums >>

Using the Wrong Products for Your Skin Type: 👎🏽
What works for your best friend might not work for you. Using products that aren’t suited for your skin type can lead to breakouts, dryness, or oiliness, which in turn can exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles. Always tailor your skincare products to your skin’s unique needs.

Ignoring Ingredients: 📖
It’s tempting to go for the latest trending product, but it’s crucial to read the ingredients list. Avoid harsh elements like alcohol and synthetic fragrances, which can dry out and irritate the skin, leading to premature aging.

Inconsistent Routines: 🗓
Dipping in and out of different products or skipping days can hinder your skin’s ability to truly benefit from your skincare regime. Consistency is key—find a routine that works and stick with it to see the best results.

By avoiding these skincare faux pas, you’ll not only enhance your skin’s health but also ensure your anti-aging efforts are as effective as possible. Remember, every product you choose and every habit you form should contribute to your skin’s long-term well-being.

EMBRACING EACH MOMENT: CELEBRATING OUR AGING JOURNEY
As we wrap up our journey through graceful aging, let’s shift our perspective: there’s nothing “anti” about aging. Here at Enlightened Beauty, we see each line and each change as an integral part of our story, marks of a life richly lived.

Rather than fighting against time, we focus on nurturing our skin—protecting it from the sun, keeping it hydrated, and using products that support its health as it evolves.

Let’s redefine what it means to care for aging skin so that this phase is not about combating aging, it’s about embracing it with love and care. Start by loving your skin for what it is today, and continue to care for it as part of embracing a full, vibrant life!

DQH Knowledge drop: In your 20s, your skin cell turnover decreases. (Cell turnover is a key component in keeping your skin youthful.) You know what else slows down? Your collagen production. Starting in your 20s, collagen decreases by about 1 percent per year. Should you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, start by eliminating behaviors that contribute to premature aging. “If it’s bad for you, it’s bad for your skin,” says dermatologist Michel Somenek. “Cigarette smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and causes premature wrinkling and a dull skin texture. Making the repeated pursed motion to inhale can also cause smoker’s lines. Alcohol and recreational drugs are toxins for the skin that damage its cellular structure and DNA,” Somenek tells us. “The faster you eliminate vices while you are young, the better chance your skin and body have to recuperate.” Also, adopting an anti-aging routine in your 20s is key. After all, the best offense is a good defense. We spoke to Somenek and experts Joshua Ross and Audrey Kunin to find out more. Keep reading for the best anti-aging products for your 20s, according to skincare professionals. Sunscreen “We all know that the sun is the number one cause of skin aging and starting the prevention in your 20s is very important,” Ross says. “The majority of your sun damage won’t start to appear until you’re in your 30s, so don’t wait until you see it surface or you’ll be behind the curve. Stay ahead of it with a good-quality zinc-based sunscreen worn daily.” Farmacy Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen An invisible sunscreen with SPF 30, plus botanical extracts meant to protect skin with tons of antioxidants. Bonus: It’s clean and fine to use under makeup. Bareminerals Complexion Rescue™ Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Although we recommend you use your SPF and moisturizer separately, we also understand moments when you don’t have time or energy for that extra step. For those times, this bareMinerals moisturizer is a great thing to have on hand. Vitamin C Serum “A great introduction to anti-aging is to start with a vitamin C serum in your morning skincare routine,” Ross says. “It’s a powerful antioxidant that will neutralize free radicals and brighten the skin.” He adds that it’s a great way to counteract the effects of the sun’s harmful rays, which, as previously mentioned, are among the biggest causes of premature aging. Drunk Elephant C-Firma™ Vitamin C Day Serum The Drunk Elephant C-Firma is a lightweight serum that promises to give skin a glow by combining the brightening powers of vitamin C with ferulic acid, l-ascorbic acid, and vitamin E. The included sodium hyaluronate is meant to replace hydration loss, so you shouldn’t have to deal with any irritation. Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum This potent serum is jam-packed with vitamin C (15 percent, to be exact), which means it’s a potential superstar at both brightening skin and dousing it in antioxidants. Peptides Using peptides on your skin has many benefits, says Somenek. “The skin barrier is what defends the body against pollution, UV rays, bacteria, and toxins. It can be damaged by several everyday factors. Using topical peptides aids in building a stronger barrier,” he says. “Peptides comprise elastic fibers, which are a type of protein. These fibers help to make skin appear taut and firm. Peptides can also help repair damaged skin, relieve inflammation, and even out skin tone. Some peptides can kill acne-causing bacteria that is common in 20-somethings.” Kunin agrees, saying, “Peptides are an excellent entry point for supporting collagen.” She recommends looking for face and eye treatments that contain these collagen-boosting powerhouses. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Cream This Charlotte Tilbury super-emollient eye cream has a base of coconut oil and shea butter (read: it’s incredibly hydrating). Botanicals plus peptides are meant to help reduce dark circles and boost collagen, respectively. This creamy moisturizer serves up potent collagen-boosting peptides and pycnogenol, and antioxidant-rich vitamin C. “Instead of sitting on top of the skin, peptides penetrate the outer layer so they go deep. The ‘signals’ they send tell the cells to produce elastin and collagen, which are needed for youthful-looking skin,” explains Somenek. At-Home Peel Pads Remember that skin cell turnover fiasco we talked about earlier? One way to help support it is by exfoliating. “Exfoliation is important to help keep skin fresh and luminous,” Kunin says. She recommends using at-home peel pads as an easy and effective way to exfoliate. “The goal in your 20s is to fight the slowing pace of cell turnover. It is wise to use products that gently exfoliate, yet still remove oil and other impurities. Products that have Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) are a good choice.” According to Somenek, you should only exfoliate two to three times a week. “People of all ages are guilty of over-exfoliating and that can be too much of a good thing,” he says. Dermadoctor Kakadu C Intensive Vitamin C Peel Pad A few swipes of this Derma Doctor powerful peel pad promise to leave your skin glowing and smooth, thanks to the seven (yes, seven) types of chemical exfoliants, including AHA and BHA. It also contains vitamin C via Kakadu plum extract for added brightening and antioxidant protection. KEY INGREDIENTS Kakadu plum extract is sourced from the Kakadu plum, a fruit grown in northern Australia. It contains vitamin C, which restores the skin’s natural barrier, increases collagen production, and soothes irritation. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel Pads These are the gold standard of peel pads, with a cult following and over 900 five-star reviews on Sephora. They’re easy to use and contain a blend of anti-aging exfoliating acids. Emollient Night Cream “In your 20s, you need to start upping the hydration in your skincare routine. You may have been cautious of over-moisturizing because of acne in your teens, but as you enter your 20s, your skin transitions and becomes drier,” Ross says. “I recommend an emollient night cream added into your evening skincare regimen.” “Twenty-somethings need to make sure that they are not using creams that will clog their pores and cause excess oil production,” says Somenek. Opt for non-comedogenic products. Cerave Skin Renewing Night Cream One great choice is the CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, which is a non-comedogenic night cream that leaves skin soft and glowy. It combines the moisturizing powers of ceramides and hyaluronic acid. RoC Retinol Correxion Max Hydration Creme “The best night cream ingredients contain retinol, benzoyl peroxide, and/or salicylic acid or hyaluronic acid. The goal is to moisturize, yet remove excess oil,” says Somenek. This Roc Retinol Correxion cream fits the bill as it contains both hyaluronic acid and retinol so it promises to moisturize while also being non-comedogenic.
