Personalized Dermatologist-Recommended Skin Care Routines for Every Skin Type

1 April 2025

Dermatologist-Recommended Personalized Custom Skin Care Routines

Are you looking for a dermatologist-recommended skin care routine? You are in the right place! I am a dermatologist and skin care expert and author of 3 bestselling books on skin care. Over 250 dermatologists, and medispas use my skin care regimen software to prescribe skin care routines. Now you have access to the same software that dermatologists use to recommend skin care routines to their patients! The dermatologists that use our software to build skin care routines follow these 3 important steps:

Diagnose

Prescribe

Educate

Traditionally, consulting a dermatologist was essential to determine the appropriate products for your skincare routine. For a decade, our software was exclusively available to doctors. However, in 2023, we let dermatologists use our skin type quiz for dermatology patients. Their patients could receive dermatologist-designed regimens directly from Skin Type Solutions if they signed up and were trained by us on the best way to prescribe skin care routines.

In 2024, we expanded access even further, enabling everyone to obtain a customized dermatologist-recommended skin care routine routine, regardless of whether they have a dermatologist or not. We understand that not everyone has easy access to a dermatologist, and appointments can be challenging to secure.

Now you can get a dermatologist-recommended skin care routine online. Right Here. Now.

All you need to do is take the quiz and you can build a dermatologist-recommended skin care regimen.

Take our quiz to get a custom routine designed by a dermatologist

You can mix products from many brands

Choose how many steps in your routine (3 in basic, 5 in complete)

Choose when to save and when to splurge

Get monthly personalized emails with dermatologist advice on your routine

3 Steps To a Dermatologist Recommended Skin Care Routine

Step 1: Diagnose your Skin Type

There are 16 distinct skin types, with eight of them classified as sensitive. Within these, there are four subtypes of sensitive skin. To determine the best regimen out of our 40,000 templates for your specific skin type, it is crucial to take our quiz. With over 25 years of research, I assure you that spending the three minutes to complete the quiz will save you significant time and money in the long run.Step 2: Build Your Routine

Once you take the quiz, you will be given a step by step skin care routine with my favorite products recommended. You can choose between a basic regimen that contains the 3 most important products:

Cleanse

Protect

Repair

Or you can choose a full regimen that has more products and works faster.

For each step you have the ability to scroll through other products that are right for you and further customize your routine with the products you like.

Step 3: Learn How To Improve Your Skin

Once you take the quiz, build a routine and purchase it- you will receive emails on Day 1, 30, 60, 90 and 120 that will guide you through the process. You will know what to expect, how to know if your products are working, and what to do if you are not seeing any skin benefits. Every month the email tells you if it is time to change a product or move to a stronger retinoid. This way your skin continues to improve. We also have a robust skin care library here that you can find the answers to any skin care questions you have.

Types of Dermatologist Recommended Skin Care Regimens

We have many different types of skin care routines developed by dermatologists:

Skin Care Routine Guidance from a Dermatologist

Our skin care routines have been used on over 300,000 people around the world, If you follow the instructions, you should see results pretty fast. Why are our routines so good?

I use evidence based data to prescribe skin care routines for my patients. To have good data to track outcomes, you need a standardized approach to skin care so that true controlled comparisons can be made to find out what really works. We have been researching skin care routines on patients in my dermatology practice since 1997. We began matching skin care to the 16 skin types in 2005.

My research has shown that:

Skin care routines should be customized by skin type

Skin type must be diagnosed accurately and scientifically

Skin care products should be layered in the proper step order

You should understand how much product to apply and how often to apply them.

You need to reevaluate your skin care routine monthly.

I have spent the last 25 years figuring out how to do this scientifically so you can have a personalized custom skin care routine that really works. The Skin Routine Builder I developed is used in dermatology offices. How does it compare to the other brands that offer custom skin care routines?

I have spent years researching skin care ingredients, skin types, ingredients, matching ingredients to skin types, building custom skin care routines, and mixing and matching the best products from different skin care brands in a custom skin care routine made with different brands. You can learn more about my skin care expertise and research here.

I feel very strongly that to personalize a custom skin care routine, you must first accurately diagnose the skin type using a valid quiz. With this philosophy, I will review the custom skin care routines by Proven Skin Care, Curology, Skinceuticals and other personalized skin care companies. Of course I believe that Skin Type Solutions has the best dermatologist recommended skin care routines. We are in the textbooks and used by doctors. But there are even more reasons that you should trust our routines.

How To Find The Best Personalized Custom Skin Care Routine?

Building a personalized custom skin care routine is a puzzle that requires years of practice and research to do it properly. There are many companies that offer personalized skin care now- but they want you to buy their skin care brand. It is better to pick the best products from different brands and combine them into a an effective skin care routine. That is what most dermatologist will do. Getting dermatologist advice can save you lots of time and money on skin care.

These are the types of things dermatologists consider when designing your routine:

Skin Type

Best ingredients to treat your skin concerns

Ingredients to avoid

pH of products

Interactions of ingredients when used together

Penetration and absorption

Routine step order

How many steps you are willing to do

Cost

What brand to use or do you want to combine brands

When to splurge and when to save

I wrote an entire chapter on this in my Baumann’s Cosmetic Dermatology textbook because skin care regimen design is very complex.

DQH Can I use salicylic acid first and then vitamin C? It’s easy to create a skincare routine, but knowing how to use it is another thing entirely. In most cases, if you’re not getting the desired skin results, it could be due to the layering of conflicting ingredients. So, is it possible that salicylic acid and vitamin C are such ingredients? Or are these active ingredients the duo that’s been missing from your skincare routine? If you want answers, stick around because today we are going to explain the benefits of salicylic acid and vitamin C and how they can be used in your daily life. What are the benefits of salicylic acid for skin? Salicylic acid is one of the most commonly used beta hydroxy acids and is favored by many people with oily, acne-prone skin. This acid is derived from willow bark, and unlike its water-soluble relatives (called alpha-hydroxy acids), salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it can penetrate deeper into the lower layers of the skin. Once it reaches the lower layers, it can help unclog pores of excess sebum, dirt, bacteria, debris, and impurities. This results in clearer skin tones and greater definition. Not only does salicylic acid benefit the underlying layers, but the outer surface of the skin benefits as well. When applied to the skin, salicylic acid removes the buildup of dead skin cells. This is accomplished by breaking the bonds that hold dead cells to the surface. Over time, this can cause the complexion to look dull and prone to acne, blackheads, and other blemishes. If you’d like to learn more about salicylic acid and how it can improve your skin, check out this dedicated blog post from a beauty insider. What are the benefits of vitamin C for skin? Vitamin C is considered one of the most powerful antioxidants, which means it is very effective at fighting free radicals and preventing them from causing further skin damage. Examples of free radicals include pollution, central heating, UV rays and harsh climate. They attack proteins, fats and cell membranes as soon as they come into contact with the skin, causing signs of premature aging such as fine lines and wrinkles as well as hyperpigmentation, flaky patches of skin and loss of elasticity. Many people usually prefer to use vitamin C in their morning routine as this ingredient gives the complexion a radiant glow. You’ll also find that vitamin C can target areas of hyperpigmentation, plumping the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The thing about vitamin C is that there are a lot of outdated studies going back to the 1950s that describe vitamin C as an unstable skin component. Thanks to improvements in modern technology, this is no longer the case as all products now contain a stable form of vitamin C. Visit The Beauty Insider to learn more about vitamin C. So please check out our blog post. Can I use salicylic acid first and then vitamin C? Yes, you absolutely can. In fact, it’s thought that using salicylic acid before using vitamin C ensures it penetrates faster and works faster. This is an efficient way to utilize two power sources, and the reason has to do with pH. For example, the skin’s natural pH is about 4.7, making it slightly acidic. Salicylic acid and vitamin C are also both acidic, and you’ll find that vitamin C is absorbed quickly into the skin. Therefore, using salicylic acid beforehand can increase the acidity of the skin and allow vitamin C to penetrate into the skin faster. While this is considered an effective way to combine two powerful ingredients, you need to be aware of your skin type and how it reacts to certain active ingredients. Even people with perfect, normal skin can experience skin sensitivity and irritation. Therefore, always consult a doctor or dermatologist before using any new products on your skin. It’s also important to follow skin application rules. In this case, you need to use the product correctly to ensure you get the best results for your skin. If you’re not sure what I mean, the basic rule for skin is to start with the thinnest consistency and work your way up to the thickest consistency. This prevents a barrier from forming on the surface, preventing other active ingredients from penetrating the skin. Can I use salicylic acid at night and vitamin C in the morning? Yes, absolutely, this is considered the most effective way to get returns without any adverse side effects. This is because there is enough time between applications to ensure that the skin’s pH levels return to balance. You’ll also find that Vitamin C is rich in antioxidants and is perfect for use in the morning to ensure your skin is protected and looking its healthiest. Due to the small size of salicylic acid molecules, it is an acid that is able to reach the deepest parts of the skin. While this is effective at keeping skin clear, it also increases the risk of irritation and photosensitivity. Therefore, many people prefer to use powerful BHAs in their evening routine without exposure to UV rays, pollution, or harsh weather. Warning: If you avoid using sunscreen every day, none of these ingredients will do what your skin needs. The combination of chemical peels and powerful ingredients increases the risk of further damage to the skin’s surface. Use SPF 50 every day to keep your skin protected and your lipid barrier healthy, even on cloudy days, keeping your skin in top condition.
