Skin Renewal Essentials: Glow With Dermatologist-Approved Products

Best Skin Care Products for Regenerating Skin

For many of my patients, having radiant, youthful skin is an absolute beauty dream. A glowing complexion exudes confidence and charisma.

Luckily, achieving a renewed, radiant complexion is easy at home with a personalized skin care routine.

What are some of the causes of rough skin?

Pale skin does not reflect light. So, to rejuvenate your skin and get a healthy glow, you first need to combat the accumulation of aged, dead skin cells on the surface of your skin.

Approximately every 30-45 days, your skin sheds its outer layer so that new skin cells can grow underneath.

However, these rough, dull skin cells don’t always fall off on their own and instead cling to the surface of your skin.

This can make the surface of your skin appear uneven, dull, pale, and not reflect light.

Smooth, reflective skin is essential for radiant skin.

You can rejuvenate your skin by using retinoids, growth factors, and hydroxy acids to activate skin stem cells and remove dead and aged skin cells from the surface of your skin.

By activating the skin’s stem cells and causing them to divide faster, new cells form faster and rise to the surface of the skin, resulting in a youthful glow.

Additionally, the surface cells are denser and reflect light better.

It’s important to note that applying stem cells to the skin does not renew the skin, but using ingredients to activate stem cells in the skin does.

Read on to find out my top recommendations for the best skincare products to give your skin a renewed, youthful glow.

These product recommendations are best used as part of a personalized skincare routine tailored to your skin type – take a skin type test to find your skin type.

Best Cleansers to Promote Skin Renewal

To achieve a renewed, healthy-looking skin, it’s important to use a skin resurfacing cleanser or scrub as part of your skincare routine.

Facial exfoliation, whether mechanical with exfoliating beads or chemical with hydroxy acids, gently removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.

This smooths the skin’s surface and causes it to better reflect light. The result is a radiant, glowing appearance.

Hydroxy acids, like glycolic and lactic acid, not only exfoliate the skin, but they also brighten the complexion, stimulate collagen production (keeping the skin smooth), even out skin tone, and have anti-aging benefits.

They also ensure that the products used in the next step of your skincare routine penetrate the skin better and work better.

Essopi Glycolic 10% Cleanser contains glycolic acid to gently exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells.

It’s even gentler than the best scrubs, making it one of the best cleansing products for dry skin.

This Renew cleanser contains antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, green tea extract, and coenzyme Q10. This low pH cleanser is combined with glycolic acid to leave skin feeling smooth and glowy.

For dry, acne-prone skin, we recommend SkinCeuticals LHA Cleansing Gel, a non-comedogenic cleanser that combines salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and glycerin.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that cleanses pores and perfectly complements the exfoliation of glycolic acid.

Glycerin is a natural humectant that moisturizes and smoothes the skin for a radiant complexion.

For more sensitive skin types who are easily irritated when using hydroxy acid cleansers, we recommend PCA Skin Cleanser, an ultra-gentle cleanser with hydroxy acids.

This Renew Cleanser contains lactic acid, a gentle relative of glycolic acid, which provides additional hydration benefits to the skin. Aloe vera also softens and soothes the skin.

For combination skin, I recommend SkinMedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser.

However, this renewing cleanser should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional trained by Skin Type Solutions.

The combination of lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, revealing dull skin that instantly becomes radiant.

If you also use a retinoid product in your skincare routine, we recommend using SkinMedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser with caution.

Best Skin Renewal Serum

After a thorough cleansing, we recommend applying the Renew Serum for a youthful glow.

The best renewing serum is the Defenage 8 in 1 BioSerum. This Renew Serum is a little more expensive, but it’s worth it as it’s the only skincare product that contains defensins.

Defensins are peptides that stimulate the formation of new skin cells, thus ensuring a youthful glow and a more even, hydrated complexion.

One study even found that defensin peptides thickened the epidermis with no signs of inflammation compared to a placebo control group of patients.

In addition to defensins, the Defenage 8 in 1 BioSerum contains niacinamide to brighten, hyaluronic acid to moisturize, and a blend of skin-soothing and soothing antioxidants for a radiant complexion.

Antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, protect the skin from further damage while improving the skin’s overall radiance. Arbutin reduces pigmentation spots and brightens the complexion.

Best Skin Renewal Moisturizers

The best skin renewal moisturizers contain either hydroxy acids or retinol (vitamin A).

These ingredients are popular with dermatologists and patients because they compact the cells in the stratum corneum (outer layer of the skin), making the surface smoother and more reflective to light.

In addition, hydroxy acids and retinols accelerate the cell life cycle, promoting the deposition of young cells on the skin’s surface, giving the skin a youthful glow.

When using hydroxy acids as retinols in your personal skincare routine, it is important to use a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 daily.

Best Retinol Skin Renewal Moisturizers

When starting to use a retinol cream, we recommend starting with the lowest possible concentration. High doses of products may cause skin irritation.

Therefore, it is best to slowly increase as your skin tolerates it.

One of our favorite retinol moisturizers for those who are just starting out with vitamin A treatments is the Essopi Retinol Treatment Serum 2X.

This retinol serum is packed with vitamin A and antioxidants to smooth the skin’s surface for a radiant glow.

Start by using a retinol serum once or twice a week, then gradually increase to every other night and eventually every night to build up your skin’s tolerance.

After a few months, when your skin has adjusted to the retinol, you can move on to the next higher concentration.

However, we recommend using the retinol products described in this article only as part of a customized skincare routine prescribed by a dermatologist.

The next most potent retinol renewal serum in the Essopi range is the Essopi Retinol Treatment Serum 5X – the best medium strength retinol for skin renewal, smoothing, and treating fine lines and wrinkles.

The next level up is the Essopi Retinol Treatment Serum 10X, which is particularly effective for acne-prone skin.

However, use of this renewing serum must be done slowly and only under the guidance of a dermatologist. They can advise you on how to best use the high dose of retinol without causing irritation.

Alternative medium-to-high concentration retinol moisturizers are Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5 and Skinceuticals Retinol 1.0.

These are great for a customized skin care routine to renew the skin and are particularly effective for skin renewal on the arms and legs.

To achieve a refreshed, irritation-free skin, it is essential to combine the SkinMedica Retinol Complex with an effective cleanser.

Jan Marini Luminate Face Lotion is another great face lotion that uses a low dose retinol formula combined with alpha-arbutin to combat discoloration and sun spots.

This moisturizer is also best used as part of a personal skin care routine.

Best Hydroxy Acid Moisturizers for Skin Renewal

When choosing a hydroxy acid moisturizer, look for ingredients like glycolic and lactic acid (forms of alpha hydroxy acids) or salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid).

Hydroxy acids can smooth, firm, and brighten dull skin for a fresh, youthful look.

Jan Marini Bio Glycolic Face Cream combines glycolic and salicylic acids with azelaic acid to open pores and refine the skin’s surface.

This regenerating moisturizer effectively treats acne scars, discoloration, and uneven skin tone for a renewed look while hyaluronic acid hydrates and firms the skin.

Alternatively, there’s SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight, a skin-renewing cream with 10% glycolic and phytic acid that brightens and firms the skin.

Bring. Phytic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that gently unclogs pores, brightens, and improves uneven skin tone. This moisturizer is best used at night as part of a dermatologist-customized skin care routine.

For particularly sensitive or allergic skin, we recommend VMV Hypoallergenics Illuminants+ Cream: First Brilliance Moisturizer.

This rejuvenating moisturizer contains glycolic and kojic acid to exfoliate and brighten your skin. It specifically targets uneven skin tone and discoloration.

Antioxidants repair sun damage to give your skin a radiant glow.

In Summary

The most effective way to renew your skin is to remove dead, dull skin cells from the surface of your skin. The buildup of skin cells blocks the reflection of light.

Therefore, gentle exfoliation with a facial scrub or cleanser is recommended, and serums and moisturizers containing glycolic acid or retinoids are essential considerations in any skincare routine to maintain a youthful glow.

The best way to achieve radiant skin is to take a skin type test. It can help you find the best skincare routine for your skin type.

DQH Knowledge drop: In your 20s, your skin cell turnover decreases. (Cell turnover is a key component in keeping your skin youthful.) You know what else slows down? Your collagen production. Starting in your 20s, collagen decreases by about 1 percent per year. Should you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, start by eliminating behaviors that contribute to premature aging. “If it’s bad for you, it’s bad for your skin,” says dermatologist Michel Somenek. “Cigarette smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and causes premature wrinkling and a dull skin texture. Making the repeated pursed motion to inhale can also cause smoker’s lines. Alcohol and recreational drugs are toxins for the skin that damage its cellular structure and DNA,” Somenek tells us. “The faster you eliminate vices while you are young, the better chance your skin and body have to recuperate.” Also, adopting an anti-aging routine in your 20s is key. After all, the best offense is a good defense. We spoke to Somenek and experts Joshua Ross and Audrey Kunin to find out more. Keep reading for the best anti-aging products for your 20s, according to skincare professionals. Sunscreen “We all know that the sun is the number one cause of skin aging and starting the prevention in your 20s is very important,” Ross says. “The majority of your sun damage won’t start to appear until you’re in your 30s, so don’t wait until you see it surface or you’ll be behind the curve. Stay ahead of it with a good-quality zinc-based sunscreen worn daily.” Farmacy Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen An invisible sunscreen with SPF 30, plus botanical extracts meant to protect skin with tons of antioxidants. Bonus: It’s clean and fine to use under makeup. Bareminerals Complexion Rescue™ Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Although we recommend you use your SPF and moisturizer separately, we also understand moments when you don’t have time or energy for that extra step. For those times, this bareMinerals moisturizer is a great thing to have on hand. Vitamin C Serum “A great introduction to anti-aging is to start with a vitamin C serum in your morning skincare routine,” Ross says. “It’s a powerful antioxidant that will neutralize free radicals and brighten the skin.” He adds that it’s a great way to counteract the effects of the sun’s harmful rays, which, as previously mentioned, are among the biggest causes of premature aging. Drunk Elephant C-Firma™ Vitamin C Day Serum The Drunk Elephant C-Firma is a lightweight serum that promises to give skin a glow by combining the brightening powers of vitamin C with ferulic acid, l-ascorbic acid, and vitamin E. The included sodium hyaluronate is meant to replace hydration loss, so you shouldn’t have to deal with any irritation. Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum This potent serum is jam-packed with vitamin C (15 percent, to be exact), which means it’s a potential superstar at both brightening skin and dousing it in antioxidants. Peptides Using peptides on your skin has many benefits, says Somenek. “The skin barrier is what defends the body against pollution, UV rays, bacteria, and toxins. It can be damaged by several everyday factors. Using topical peptides aids in building a stronger barrier,” he says. “Peptides comprise elastic fibers, which are a type of protein. These fibers help to make skin appear taut and firm. Peptides can also help repair damaged skin, relieve inflammation, and even out skin tone. Some peptides can kill acne-causing bacteria that is common in 20-somethings.” Kunin agrees, saying, “Peptides are an excellent entry point for supporting collagen.” She recommends looking for face and eye treatments that contain these collagen-boosting powerhouses. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Cream This Charlotte Tilbury super-emollient eye cream has a base of coconut oil and shea butter (read: it’s incredibly hydrating). Botanicals plus peptides are meant to help reduce dark circles and boost collagen, respectively. This creamy moisturizer serves up potent collagen-boosting peptides and pycnogenol, and antioxidant-rich vitamin C. “Instead of sitting on top of the skin, peptides penetrate the outer layer so they go deep. The ‘signals’ they send tell the cells to produce elastin and collagen, which are needed for youthful-looking skin,” explains Somenek. At-Home Peel Pads Remember that skin cell turnover fiasco we talked about earlier? One way to help support it is by exfoliating. “Exfoliation is important to help keep skin fresh and luminous,” Kunin says. She recommends using at-home peel pads as an easy and effective way to exfoliate. “The goal in your 20s is to fight the slowing pace of cell turnover. It is wise to use products that gently exfoliate, yet still remove oil and other impurities. Products that have Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) are a good choice.” According to Somenek, you should only exfoliate two to three times a week. “People of all ages are guilty of over-exfoliating and that can be too much of a good thing,” he says. Dermadoctor Kakadu C Intensive Vitamin C Peel Pad A few swipes of this Derma Doctor powerful peel pad promise to leave your skin glowing and smooth, thanks to the seven (yes, seven) types of chemical exfoliants, including AHA and BHA. It also contains vitamin C via Kakadu plum extract for added brightening and antioxidant protection. KEY INGREDIENTS Kakadu plum extract is sourced from the Kakadu plum, a fruit grown in northern Australia. It contains vitamin C, which restores the skin’s natural barrier, increases collagen production, and soothes irritation. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel Pads These are the gold standard of peel pads, with a cult following and over 900 five-star reviews on Sephora. They’re easy to use and contain a blend of anti-aging exfoliating acids. Emollient Night Cream “In your 20s, you need to start upping the hydration in your skincare routine. You may have been cautious of over-moisturizing because of acne in your teens, but as you enter your 20s, your skin transitions and becomes drier,” Ross says. “I recommend an emollient night cream added into your evening skincare regimen.” “Twenty-somethings need to make sure that they are not using creams that will clog their pores and cause excess oil production,” says Somenek. Opt for non-comedogenic products. Cerave Skin Renewing Night Cream One great choice is the CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, which is a non-comedogenic night cream that leaves skin soft and glowy. It combines the moisturizing powers of ceramides and hyaluronic acid. RoC Retinol Correxion Max Hydration Creme “The best night cream ingredients contain retinol, benzoyl peroxide, and/or salicylic acid or hyaluronic acid. The goal is to moisturize, yet remove excess oil,” says Somenek. This Roc Retinol Correxion cream fits the bill as it contains both hyaluronic acid and retinol so it promises to moisturize while also being non-comedogenic.
